The origins of Bootle can be traced back to the Domesday Book, William the Conqueror’s great survey of Britain, conducted in 1086. Then, Bootle was known as ‘Boltelai’, a derivative of ‘building’, although it is not known which building that refers to.

Bootle became a sea-bathing resort in the 19th Century. Some of the wealthy ship-owners, dignitaries such as Lord Derby, and commuters to Liverpool built large Victorian villas here, especially around Merton Road and Derby Park.

When the Liverpool to Southport railway was opened in the 1840’s, Bootle grew quickly. It grew as a port in the 19th century, and was strategically important in World War II for supplies from America. This led to large-scale bombing during the ‘Liverpool Blitz’, and mass evacuations of children, especially to North Wales towns such as Llandudno and Conwy.

Although Bootle declined after the war, long-term investment in the area by firms such as David Phillips & Partners Solicitors, and regeneration projects assisted with European funding, have made it a town ‘on the up’.

Famous former residents of the town include Tom Baker (a former ‘Dr. Who’ and voice-over character on ‘Little Britain’); Tom O’Connor, comedian; George Davies, the founder of Next clothing, and George at Asda; and Jamie Carragher, Liverpool FC and England defender.
